I'm new to photography and looking to invest in my first Nikon camera. As a beginner, I want a camera that is user-friendly, has good image quality, and offers room for growth as I improve my skills.

What Nikon camera would you recommend for a beginner like me? I primarily want to shoot landscapes, portraits, and travel photos. Any advice on must-have features or lenses would also be greatly appreciated!

I have used mine in all sorts of conditions and it is just so reliable, never had a single glitch or issue even after thousands of shots. If you are really looking to grow into landscapes and portraits specifically though, I have been extremely satisfied with the Nikon Z5 Full Frame Mirrorless Camera. It feels a bit more solid in the hand and the dual card slots give me so much peace of mind when I am out shooting all day. Honestly, for portraits you should check out the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 Compact Prime. It is pretty cheap, usually under 300 dollars, and the way it handles light is just beautiful. You are gonna love the Z system, it is super intuitive for beginners... stick with it and you will see your shots improve fast.

Nikon Z5 for full frame, and Nikon Z50 for APS-C.

Re: "Works great for me" - you definitely have to be careful with the sensor dust on those mirrorless bodies though. Since there isnt a shutter or mirror box in the way during lens swaps, you basically invite every particle of dust to settle on that glass. I always tell people to make sure they check their sensor at f/22 against a white wall before a big trip just to be safe. Honestly, I got so paranoid about gear maintenance that I spent all of yesterday digging through my old storage bins in the garage.

  • Found a bunch of old 512MB SD cards that are basically useless now
  • Discovered a battery for a camera I sold five years ago
  • Spent way too long trying to untangle a mountain of proprietary USB cables I actually got distracted and started looking up the history of cable standards because I found this weird FireWire 400 cable and couldnt remember what it was for. Ended up reading about old Mac towers for two hours and didnt even finish cleaning my workspace. My cat eventually just fell asleep in the empty gear bag and I didn't have the heart to move her... anyway lol, sorry kinda went off topic there.

Nikon Z30 is another great choice for beginners.
