I recently got a Nikon Z50 and want to start doing some vlogging and videos that require good audio quality. I'm looking for recommendations on the best microphones to pair with the Z50 for crisp, clear sound. I'd prefer something reasonably priced that is compact and easy to use on-camera or on a small rig.

What mics have you found work well with the Nikon Z50 for vlogging and video projects? I appreciate any advice from Z50 users!

Quick reply since I've had some bad luck with wireless interference lately. If you want maximum reliability, you might want to consider a wired setup instead, tbh.

  • I would suggest the Sony ECM-LV1 Stereo Lavalier Microphone. It is cheap and doesn't need its own battery, which is one less thing to fail mid-vlog.
  • Be careful about the cable length tho. Make sure to secure it to your clothes so it doesn't snag and pull on the camera.
  • Make sure you check the Z50's mic jack for dust. Even a little bit of pocket lint can cause a crackly connection that'll ruin your audio.

Jumping in here to add to the point above about wireless kits. I've been using the Z50 for a while now and I'm quite satisfied with how it handles external inputs, but it really helps to know your environment first. Are you planning to record mostly in a controlled indoor space or will you be out vlogging in the wind? That detail matters for managing the Z50 preamps properly. From a technical perspective, I've found these two options provide the best balance of size and performance:

  • Rode VideoMicro II Compact Shotgun Microphone is an excellent choice for a small rig because it is passive and adds almost zero weight.
  • Sennheiser+MKE+400+On-Camera+Mic&linkCode=osi&tag=7649-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 On-Camera Mic offers more control with its dedicated gain switches and low-cut filter, which helps immensely with the Nikon's internal noise floor. Either of these will significantly improve your production value. I've used both and honestly have no complaints about the audio clarity tho the Sennheiser is better if you're further from the lens. Just make sure you set your camera gain manually rather than using auto levels to avoid that hissing sound.

In my experience, you really dont need to spend a fortune to get pro results on the Z50. The preamps in these smaller Z bodies are surprisingly clean if you keep the camera gain low and let the mic do the heavy lifting tho.

  • just get a wireless kit from Rode
  • any compact condenser from Sennheiser will do the trick Theyve both got the impedance matching down perfectly for Nikons input jack. Just stay away from those random off-brand cheapos because the floor noise will kill your soul... definitely worth spending a few extra bucks for a brand that actually knows how to shield their circuits properly and keep that signal-to-noise ratio high.

Get the DJI Mic 2. It is compact, and really powerful.
