I recently purchased a Nikon Z6 II and I'm looking for recommendations on the best flash to pair with it. I primarily shoot portraits and events, so I need a flash that can keep up with my demands.
What flashes have you used with the Nikon Z6 II, and what has your experience been like? I'd really appreciate any insights or recommendations you can provide to help me make an informed decision.
I'd actually be careful about going with Godox if you're doing high-volume events. I know they're popular and cheap, but I would suggest the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight for the Z6 II instead. It's the only one with a real internal cooling system that won't quit on you after twenty minutes of fast shooting. I've seen too many third-party flashes thermal throttle right when the action gets good at a wedding. If you're dead set on a round head but want better reliability than what the others mentioned, you might want to consider the Westcott FJ80 II Speedlight. The build quality feels way more professional and the touchscreen interface is much cleaner than the Godox menu system. Just keep in mind that mixing brands can sometimes mess with the TTL accuracy in tricky lighting, so try to stick to one ecosystem once you start. Tbh the native Nikon glass and flash combo is still the gold standard for a reason even if it costs more up front.
Building on the earlier suggestion about the SB-5000, i actually disagree slightly with the focus on just the flash body. Ive been thinking about your event needs and honestly, the bottleneck is usually recycle time and power management, not just the head cooling. In my experience, a more technical DIY approach works better for high-volume work. I still swear by the Nikon SB-910 Speedlight over the newer models for event reliability. If you pair it with a Nikon SD-9 External Battery Pack, it becomes a totally different beast. The SB-910 is great because it allows you to manually override the thermal shutdown in the custom settings... just gotta be careful you dont actually melt the housing during a long burst. The Z6 II works flawlessly with the older Nikon CLS system and the build quality on these older pro units is just superior to most modern stuff ive handled lately.
Re: "Helpful thread 👍"
Godox flashes like V1 and V1 Pro are great choices.
Same boat, watching this

Huh interesting. I had no idea. The more you know I guess 🤷
I recommended the SB-700.
Godox V1 Pro.
