Which thumb grips are highly recommended for Leica Q3 cameras?

Honestly the ergonomics on the Q3 are driving me nuts compared to my old Q2. I thought my old grip would fit but the new button layout makes it totally unusable and I keep hitting the play button by mistake. I need something solid for a shoot in Berlin next week, what actually works without blocking the dials?

The Q3 button layout definitely complicates things for older accessories. If you want something that fits perfectly without blocking the play button or the command dial, the Leica Thumb Support Q3 Brass Black 19662 is basically your safest bet. It is pricey but it aligns exactly with the new geometry and doesnt feel flimsy when you are walking around Berlin. Another solid choice if you prefer a different feel is the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-SQ3. It is machined specifically for the Q3 body so you wont have those accidental button presses. Quick tip: make sure whatever you buy has a silicone insert or a tight tolerance on the hot shoe contact point. Some cheaper generic ones tend to wiggle and can actually wear down the finish on the shoe over time if you arent careful.

@Reply #2 - good point! The interaction between the grip and the case is something people often overlook. Since you are heading to Berlin next week and need something that wont fail you, I have been extremely satisfied with the Haoge THB-Q3B Thumb Grip for Leica Q3. It is CNC machined from high-grade aluminum and specifically designed to account for the Q3 shifted button cluster. Technically speaking, the clearance around the command dial is the make-or-break factor here. The Haoge design features a precise scalloped edge that allows your thumb to rotate the dial fully without any interference. It fits the hot shoe with zero lateral play, which is vital for maintaining a stable one-handed hold during street sessions. If you want something a bit more refined but still cost-effective compared to the OEM brass, the LIM'S Design Leica Q3 Metal Grip Thumb Support is another solid option. It uses a mounting system that feels very secure and matches the finish well. I have found that these third-party options often provide better leverage than the original Leica brass one because the arm is slightly longer. This shifts the center of gravity back towards your palm, which helps with the fatigue you are likely feeling. No complaints with the ergonomics after switching to this setup. It basically solves that play button interference issue by raising the resting point of your thumb just enough.

I would suggest checking if you're using a half case because some grips wont fit right...

  • fixed or folding design?
  • what's your budget? Just trying to help.
