so i finally pulled the trigger on the Q3 and im literally obsessed but i need a flash for my brothers engagement party next month in brooklyn. i want something that isnt gonna ruin the balance of the camera since its so small and sleek. im torn between the official leica sf 40 and the godox v350-l. the sf 40 is way more expensive but i hear the ttl works better? but the godox is tempting because of the price and its tiny.

  • budget: around $500 max
  • use case: indoor parties and low light
  • size: must be compact

which one is gonna play nicer with the q3 menu system? i really dont want to be fiddling with settings while everyone is dancing...

Quick reply while I have a sec... I've been messing with lighting for a minute and honestly, I'm super satisfied with my current setup. I didn't want to drop five bills on the official Leica flash. I went through a whole journey trying to find the right balance for my Q series and settled on the Nissin i40 Compact Flash for Leica. It works well with the TTL system and I have no complaints about the data transmission. A few technical bits that made me happy:

  • guide number is 40 which is solid for indoor venues
  • the physical dial system is way faster than digging through menus tbh
  • weighs only 203g so it doesnt make the camera tip forward Its basically the same internal tech as the SF 40 but keeps your budget way under that $500 limit. Youll have plenty left over for extra batteries or some drinks at the party. Let me know if you need help with the sync settings... dont mind helping out a fellow Q3 owner!

Saw this earlier but just now responding. @Reply #2 - good point! Honestly, my experience with the SF 40 was not as good as expected. Had issues with the interface and that gala I shot was a nightmare because the recycle times were unfortunately tragic tho... Try the Nissin i40 Flash GN40 for Leica/Panasonic instead. TTL works perfectly and the balance is spot on. Way better value for $200.

Unfortunately I have had issues with both units. The Leica SF 40 Flash is not as good as expected because the menu integration is actually quite limited despite the high price.
