honestly so fed up with the handling on my SL2 right now. I was shooting a corporate gig in downtown Chicago yesterday and my hand literally started cramping after like twenty minutes because the body is just so slippery and heavy. I almost dropped the damn thing during a keynote and i have a huge wedding to shoot next weekend so i need a fix fast. I tried some cheap knockoff from amazon but it wobbles and keeps blocking the rear dial which is driving me crazy. is the official leica thumb support actually worth the money or is there a better option from like match technical or something? i just need it to feel secure and not move around at all...

Look, i have been shooting with SL bodies for years and if youre doing weddings you cant risk a wobbly grip. Cheap ones are a nightmare. In my experience, you have two real choices for reliability:

  • Leica Thumb Support SL2/SL2-S/SL3 18548 Aluminum
  • This is what i use. Its rock solid and wont budge because the tolerances are exact. It doesnt block the dial at all. The price is high but it feels like part of the camera.
  • Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-SL2 Brass
  • These are legendary for a reason. Its made of solid brass and fits very snugly. I would go with the Leica brand one for your wedding next week. I've tried many and official gear is just safer when you have a heavy lens attached. Stick with the OEM to be safe.

I've been looking at this too. If you want to save some cash, look at the Haoge THB-SL2B Metal Thumb Rest for Leica SL2 SL2-S. It's about 50 bucks and actually stays put tho.

  • Make sure the rubber pads are aligned so it doesnt scratch the finish.
  • Check the hot shoe fit immediately to avoid stressing the pins. It's a decent middle ground if you dont wanna drop 200 bucks right now.

@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, be super careful because i nearly ruined my hot shoe last year. My old grip felt secure but it actually warped the metal. Now i always check:

  • if there is a rubber pad for protection
  • how much leverage it puts on the pins
  • if it wobbles at all Definitely double check the fit before that wedding, cuz a top plate repair is gonna be a total nightmare.
