so i finally pulled the trigger on a used m10 and im heading to kyoto for two weeks next month. mostly gonna be walking around temples and busy streets all day so i really need a strap that wont kill my neck. i spent way too much on the body so my budget for the strap is like $120 max.
i looked into those peak design slide lite things because the quick release is cool but honestly they look kinda techy and weird on a rangefinder?? then i saw the official leica leather ones but i read reviews saying they are super stiff and take forever to break in. i also keep seeing people mention artisan and artist silk cords but i worry they might dig into my shoulder if im carrying it for 8 hours straight.
i just want something that looks classic but actually functions for long days of street photography without being a total pain. i really dont want those bulky metal rings scratching the top plate either which is a huge concern for me since i want to keep the resale value decent. what are you guys actually using on your M bodies these days? is there a specific brand that strikes a good balance between comfort and that minimalist look? maybe something i havent seen on the usual gear blogs yet...
Honestly, if youre worried about the top plate, the technical solution is a strap with built-in leather o-ring guards. Most boutique brands include these, but the cheap ones are too thin and slide around. I've been using the Artisan and Artist ACAM-301N Silk Cord Strap Black for a while. Its 120cm long and about 8mm thick. The silk weave is technically very strong, but physics says a thin cord will concentrate pressure on your neck over a long day. If you want comfort, look at the Rock n Roll Straps M-Series Leather Camera Strap which uses a wider 15mm or 20mm profile to distribute that M10 weight better. Technical tip: check the split ring material. Stainless steel is standard, but some cheaper ones use softer alloys that can deform under stress. If you get a strap without protectors, just buy a pack of rubber o-rings from a hardware store and slide them onto the lugs first. Its a $1 fix that saves the resale value. For Kyoto, a 100cm-110cm length is usually best for chest height carry which keeps the camera from swinging into things in crowds. Leather ones like the Tap and Dye Legacy Leather Camera Strap 42 inch are good because the vegetable tanned leather actually absorbs some shock, unlike static nylon or thin silk. It feels more secure when youre moving through temple crowds and dont want the body bouncing.
> i really dont want those bulky metal rings scratching the top plate either which is a huge concern for me ugh seriously i have this exact same issue right now. i have been looking for like a month since i got my m10 and honestly im just so frustrated with the options out there. everything is either way too expensive for what it is or looks like a seatbelt which totally ruins the vibe of the camera. i keep worrying about those metal rings scratching my top plate too and its driving me crazy that there isnt a simple, comfy middle ground for us. literally in the same boat and still havent pulled the trigger on anything because nothing feels right... hope we find something soon because im tired of scrolling through gear blogs.
@Reply #1 - good point! Im obsessed with my Gordy's Camera Straps Leather Neck Strap. Its super cheap, looks amazing, and was incredibly comfy during my last Kyoto trek. Seriously fantastic!
