So I finally did it! I saved up for months and just picked up a used Leica M10-P from a shop here in Seattle and honestly I am so hyped. Ive been shooting Fuji for years but always wanted that rangefinder experience and man the build quality is just insane. Im planning this big trip to Tokyo and Kyoto in about three weeks so I really want to get my setup dialed in before I go because I know Im gonna be walking like ten miles a day doing street photography. My one gripe so far is that the body is just a little bit slippery? Like it feels great but I feel like I might drop it if I dont have a death grip on it. Everyone says a thumb grip is the way to go to make it feel more secure.

I spent all last night looking stuff up and I keep seeing a few main options:

  • The Match Technical Thumbs Up which everyone swears by
  • The official Leica brand one that is crazy expensive
  • Some random cheap ones on Amazon like Haoge or Lensmate

I keep seeing the Match Technical mentioned as the gold standard but then I saw some forum posts saying it might block the dial or feel too chunky on the M10 specifically. Then there is the official Leica one which costs like $250 which is honestly kind of a joke for a piece of metal but people say the fit is perfect because obviously Leica made it. Im worried about the cheap ones being loose in the hot shoe or maybe scratching the finish of my camera since I want to keep it looking nice. I dont want to buy something that ruins the brass or feels cheap after spending all this money on the actual kit.

I really want something that feels like it belongs on the camera and doesnt wiggle at all. Budget is maybe $150-180 max because I already spent way too much on the body and a 35mm Summicron. If you guys have used the Match Technical versus the OEM one or even something else like the IDS Works ones I keep seeing on Instagram please let me know. Which one actually feels the most ergonomic for long days of shooting and stays tight? Is the official one worth the extra cash or is there a better third party one I missed...

Over the years ive tried a bunch of these. I remember buying the official Leica one once and feeling like a total sucker because of the price. For my M10, i eventually grabbed the Haoge THB-M10B Thumb Up Rest for Leica M10 and honestly? It stays perfectly snug and has never once scratched the finish. Safety wise its rock solid. Save that extra cash for your Tokyo trip, youll thank me later.

Unfortunately, the OEM grip really lacks the leverage you need. Id go with the Match Technical Thumbs Up CSEP-10 for Leica M10 for its superior brass density and much tighter shoe tolerances.

Quick reply while I have a sec... are you planning to use a flash or EVF at all during your Tokyo trip? If so, these grips can be a real hassle to swap out. I tried the Lensmate Leica M10 Thumb Grip to save some cash and it was surprisingly solid for the price. It's a decent middle ground, but do you need that hot shoe free for other accessories?
