I just got an M11 for my Japan trip next month but spent my whole savings on it so I’m pretty broke now lol. I’m totally new to Leica and honestly overwhelmed, sorry if this is a dumb question.
I don’t want to mess it up... what are the absolute must-have accessories for a beginner?
Congrats on the M11! Spending your life savings on a Leica is basically a rite of passage, so dont feel bad lol. In my experience with M bodies over the years, the absolute first thing you need is a screen protector. Ive seen too many people scratch their displays on the first day and it kills the resale value later. Grab the Leica Screen Protector for M11 18810 and just get it on there before you hit Tokyo. It is way cheaper than a repair. The second thing is a spare battery. The M11 is way better than the M10 for power, but if youre shooting all day in Japan and using the screen or live view for focusing, you dont want to get stuck with a brick by lunch time. Pick up a Leica BP-SCL7 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery 18531 if you can swing it. Its expensive but honestly essential for travel. Since youre broke, skip the fancy leather half-cases and expensive thumb grips for now. Honestly, you dont need them to take good photos. Ive tried many gadgets over the years and most of them just add unnecessary weight. Just focus on getting comfortable with the rangefinder... it takes a bit to get the hang of focusing but once it clicks, youll never want to go back to autofocus. Have a blast in Japan, the light there is incredible.
Quick reply while I'm grabbin a coffee! You made a fantastic choice with the M11, it is an amazing machine for street photography. Since you are gonna be in Japan, you will be doing a lot of walking and shooting, so handling is everything. The M bodies are notoriously slippery, so my big recommendation is a thumb grip to help with stability. It basically makes the camera feel way more secure in your hand without adding much bulk. Also, those 60MP files need fast storage or you will be waiting for the buffer constantly. I suggest checking out the Red Dot Forum tutorials to get your settings dialed in before you leave!
Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
Honestly if you are broke from the purchase dont overcomplicate it. Main thing is keeping that sensor and glass safe while you are traveling. Get a basic cleaning kit before you leave. A Giottos Rocket Air Blaster Large is basically mandatory for blowing dust off the sensor or lens without actually touching it. It is way safer than using your breath or a shirt tail. Also since you spent so much on the lens, grab a decent filter. It saves the front element from scratches or sea spray in Japan. The B+W 46mm 010 UV-Haze MRC nano is reliable and wont mess with your image quality. Tbh skip the fancy leather cases for now since money is tight. Just use a padded insert in a bag you already own. Much cheaper than a dedicated camera bag and keeps the M11 hidden from thieves too. Keeping it simple is usually the best move anyway.
