What are the must-have accessories for a new Leica M11?

Finally pulled the trigger on a black M11 after months of saving up and honestly I'm terrified of dropping it. I'm heading to Florence and Rome in about three weeks for a vacation and I really want to have it dialed in before then. The camera feels a bit slick in the hand though so I'm looking at grips or thumb rests. My budget is pretty squeezed after buying the body and a 35mm Cron so I have maybe $400-500 left to get this thing travel-ready.

I'm stuck between a few combinations:

  • The official Leica thumb support and a simple Peak Design strap
  • A cheaper Haoge thumb rest combined with a nice Oberwerth leather half case
  • Just the Leica protector case and no thumb rest at all

The official Leica thumb rest is like $250 which feels like a total rip-off but I've heard the third-party ones can sometimes wiggle or even scratch the hot shoe finish. Then with the cases the Oberwerth looks incredible but the Leica one has that easy battery access which seems useful since I'm gonna be shooting all day. Is the build quality on the Leica accessories really that much better or am I just paying for the logo at this point? Which of these would be most comfortable for walking 10 miles a day?

  • Ngl you're definitely paying for the red dot. Worth every penny though. Ive been really happy with this setup for long walks:
  • Kamerakraft LM11 Grip
  • Vi Vante Phoenix Camera Strap It feels way more secure in Italy. Quick question tho, are you gonna be swapping batteries a lot or just charging via USB-C? That really changes which case makes sense for those long days.

> Is the build quality on the Leica accessories really that much better or am I just paying for the logo at this point? Honestly, the logo tax is real. I’ve been using the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-MX for a while and it’s rock solid with zero wiggle. It actually feels more integrated than the official one imo. For the grip issue, skipping the official Leica accessories is smart if you're on a budget. I’ve been very satisfied with this combo:

tbh I went through this exact same panic when I got my M11. I actually ended up measuring the hot shoe dimensions with calipers because I was so worried about play. I would suggest you be careful with the cheaper options because the brass underneath that black paint is softer than you think. I once used a budget rest on an older M and it actually slightly warped the hot shoe rails after a week of heavy use. Definitely not worth it for a body this expensive... Here is what I would do to stay under budget and keep it safe for your trip:

  • Leica M11 Thumb Support Black 24029 because the fit is basically perfect to the micron.
  • Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap Black for the quick-release anchors.
  • Leica M11 Screen Protector 18626 for the 9H hardness protection. The official thumb rest feels like it is part of the chassis once its locked in. You might want to consider how the weight distribution changes too. Since the black M11 uses an aluminum top plate, it is lighter than the silver one, and I found my hand cramped up after just a few hours without that extra leverage. If you really want a case, the Oberwerth Half Case for Leica M11 is beautiful, but make sure you get the one with the battery access flap or you will be struggling every night to get your SD card out. Those tolerances on the leather can be tight and a bit of a pain if you're swapping batteries in a hurry.

Literally dealing with this exact same anxiety right now. I just picked up my M11 and the thought of it slipping out of my hand while walking through a crowded piazza is actually keeping me up at night. Honestly, it is like holding a very expensive, very beautiful bar of soap. In my experience with these bodies over the years, there are a few things you definitely want to watch out for to keep it reliable:

  • Stay away from any metal accessories that dont have some kind of internal padding or felt. Ive seen way too many people ruin the finish on a brand new Leica because they saved fifty bucks on a grip that rattled against the baseplate.
  • Be super careful with anything that puts leverage on the hot shoe. Those rails are tougher than they used to be, but a long thumb rest basically acts like a pry bar if the camera gets snagged on your bag or jacket...
  • If you go with a case, make sure it doesnt trap moisture. Rome can get surprisingly humid and you really dont want condensation sitting against the chassis for a week. Total nightmare fuel thinking about it, right? I still havent decided what to do either.
