I finally pulled the trigger on the Leica Q3 for my trip to Tokyo next month and man, the camera is incredible but I am honestly so fed up with trying to find the right gear to go with it. Every time I look at the official Leica accessories I just get frustrated because they cost a fortune and half the stuff doesnt even seem practical for actual travel. My logic was that if Im spending this much on a body I should protect it but the official half-case blocks the battery door? Why would they do that? Im getting so annoyed trying to piece this together.

So I was thinking about maybe getting a Lims case instead or maybe just a screen protector and a good strap? But then there is the whole thumb grip situation. I really want one for stability when Im doing street stuff at night in Shinjuku but the Leica one is like $200 which is just insane for a piece of metal. I have about $500 left in my budget for everything else and Im stuck. I was looking at:

  • a decent wrist strap since the neck ones are bulky
  • maybe a UV filter just for lens protection
  • a faster way to charge while walking around

People say the internal USB-C charging is fine but Im worried about being out all day and having it die on me. Im just looking for what people actually use day-to-day when theyre on the move. What are the absolute must-haves that wont make me regret my life choices...

Tbh, official prices are wild. The Lims Design Leica Q3 Half Case is a decent option tho since it has a battery door cutout. For lens protection, I use a B+W 49mm Master Clear MRC Nano Filter. Swapping the expensive thumb grip for a Haoge THB-Q3B Thumb Grip worked well for me. Internal charging's fine, just bring a power bank for long days... Tokyo is kinda intense for batteries.

What's your expected daily shot volume? I'm satisfied with these:

Building on the earlier suggestion, I actually had a pretty bad experience relying on USB-C charging while walking around. The connection just isn't as solid as you'd hope, and unfortunately, I've had cables wiggle loose in my bag, leaving me with a dead battery right when the light got good.

  • Leica BP-SCL6 Lithium-Ion Battery: I know it's a gut punch to the budget, but a spare battery is way more reliable than a power bank. Swapping takes five seconds and you aren't tethered to a wire.
  • SmallRig Cage for Leica Q3 4216: Honestly, I found most leather half-cases to be more style over substance. This cage is rugged, has a built-in grip area, and doesn't block any doors. It's much better for peace of mind when you're getting bumped in crowds.
  • Gordys Camera Straps Leather Wrist Strap: If you're set on a wrist strap, this one is way more heavy-duty than the thin nylon ones that tend to dig in after an hour. Just trying to make sure you dont run into the same gear failures I did... Tokyo is too good to miss because of a finicky cable or a loose grip tho.

Tokyo is going to be amazing! Are you planning to shoot a ton of video or just stills? I was so scared of running out of juice on my first trip. I tried using a portable power bank but the cable was super finicky with the PD charging specs. It kept disconnecting! It was so stressful because I thought Id break the port. I eventually looked at cable locks since I dont want to risk anything!
