Ive shot M bodies for years but I finally swapped my light glass for a heavy 75mm Lux and my neck is killing me. The thin strap is digging in way too much.
I need something thick but supple before my Berlin trip next month. Budget is $150. What are the best leather straps for Leica M series cameras?
I went through this exact same thing back in 2018 when I took an M10 and a Noctilux to Tokyo for a week. I thought my neck was gonna snap after day two. Those thin stock straps are basically cheese wire once you put real glass on the body. I tried some cheap ones from Amazon first but they were stiff as cardboard and actually made the chafing worse... honestly a waste of money. What you want is something that spreads the load without being some ugly neoprene gym bag strap. I eventually landed on the Rock n Roll Straps M-Leica Classic Black Leather 100cm and its been on my main body ever since. Its made of these linked leather pieces that kinda act like a shock absorber when youre walking. It stays supple because the leather is high quality but the width is what saves you. If you want something more traditional but still beefy, the Artisan & Artist ACAM-280 Leather Strap Wide is another solid bet under your budget. Its wider than the standard stuff and the leather gets buttery soft after about a week of heavy use. I found that with the 75mm Lux, you really need at least 15-20mm of width at the neck. Dont cheap out on the thin ones just because they look classic or youll be miserable in Berlin. Those cobblestone streets and a heavy lens will kill your posture if the strap is digging in.
Just catching up on this thread. I actually disagree a bit with the idea that just going wider is the automatic fix. If the leather is too thick, it wont contour to your shoulder properly and that heavy 75mm lens will just bounce around. Be careful with those heavy-duty belt style straps... they look cool but take forever to break in.
Late to the party but I wanted to chime in because that 75 Lux is a total beast. I learned the hard way during a rainy trip to London that just getting a wide strap isnt enough... if the leather is stiff as a board it just digs in at different angles. You really need something that molds to your shoulder over time.
