So I finally made the jump to the M11 after shooting with an M10 for years and man the lack of a bottom plate is still tripping me out. I’m so used to the old ritual of taking the baseplate off but now that everything is just right there I’m struggling to find a half-case that actually makes sense. I picked up a cheapo one from a local shop here in Seattle just to protect it for a weekend trip but it was garbage—totally blocked the USB-C port and the leather felt like plastic.

I'm looking for something high quality since I plan on keeping this body for a long time. Budget is maybe $300 or $350 max. I’ve looked at the Arte di Mano stuff which is gorgeous but the lead times are insane right now and I’ve got a trip to Japan coming up in three weeks. Is the official Leica protector actually worth the money or does it feel cheap? I’ve heard mixed things about the fitment. Also if anyone knows of a maker that has a really solid door/flap for the battery and SD card access that doesn't feel like it's gonna snap off after a month of use let me know. I really don't want to have to unscrew the whole case every time I need to dump my cards onto my laptop. Any brands I’m overlooking?

I grabbed the TP Original Leather Half Case for Leica M11 before my last trip. Its surprisingly good for the price, the magnetic door stays shut, and I had zero USB issues.

Totally agree with the guys above, but since you're looking for something super high-end for the long haul, you gotta look at Oberwerth! I'm totally obsessed with mine.

  • Oberwerth Half Case for Leica M11
  • This thing is amazing! The leather is thick, smells fantastic, and the magnetic flap for the battery and SD card is the best I've used. It stays shut but opens easy when you need it. It also leaves plenty of room for the USB-C cable which is huge.
  • Vi Vante Half Case Leica M11
  • These are great if you want something with more personality. The leather is buttery soft and the fit is really tight. Honestly, skip the official Leica M11 Protector Leather Black. It feels kinda flimsy for the price and fitment is hit or miss. Since you leave soon, check B&H, they usually have these in stock so you wont be waiting on international shipping!

Any updates on this?

I've been really happy with the protection on my setup, it definitely makes the camera feel way more secure. Finding a reliable door for the battery is kinda the hardest part tho... Are you looking for something with a built-in grip for better handling or do you want to keep the profile slim? Also, is that USB access a total dealbreaker for you?

Unfortunately, I have been seeing some really annoying QC issues with the tolerances on those boutique cases lately. The alignment on the USB-C cutouts is often off by just a millimeter or two, which is a massive pain for tethering or fast charging. It is definitely not as good as expected considering the prices. Are you looking for a case that has a built-in metal sub-frame for extra rigidity, or are you prioritizing a softer, more organic feel for the grip? Also, is that three-week deadline for your Japan trip a hard cutoff, or would you consider something with a slightly longer ship time if it meant better spec accuracy? Japan is going to be epic by the way. Last time I was in Tokyo I spent way too much time in those tiny basement shops in Ginza just hunting for specific 1950s light meters that I dont even need. I basically just geeked out over the mechanical clicks for two days straight while my friends were busy looking at temples. Honestly forgot why I even brought my main rig at one point... anyway. But yeah, let me know about the grip preference because that really narrows down the technical specs.
