I am literally panicking because I leave for a 2-week street photography trip in Italy in less than ten days and my M11 is still naked and vulnerable. I finally pulled the trigger on the camera body but I forgot the case and I really dont want to scratch the bottom plate on some stone wall in Florence. Im looking at three options right now and cant decide. First is the Oberwerth Tag-Along case because it has that cutout for the battery and USB port which is super convenient since I dont want to take the whole thing off every time I charge it. My logic was that it looks really premium but its like $400 which is pushing my budget after I already spent so much on the glass. Then there is the Arte di Mano cases which everyone says are the absolute best but the lead times usually take forever and I need this thing shipped to New York by next Thursday latest. I also looked at the official Leica one but it feels a bit generic for the price? I want something that smells like real leather and will actually age well. Is there anywhere that stocks Arte di Mano for immediate shipping or should I just go with the Oberwerth? Or maybe a Lim's case if they are actually good? I need something that fits like a glove and wont move around while I'm walking 10 miles a day...
I went through the exact same panic last year before a trip to Greece. Honestly spending 400 bucks on a case after dropping nearly 9k on the body and lenses felt like total overkill to me. I ended up getting the Lim's Design Leather Half Case for Leica M11 and Ive been super satisfied with how it turned out. It has this solid aluminum base that feels really sturdy... actually makes the camera feel way more balanced when youre using bigger glass. The fit is basically perfect, no wiggling at all even after months of dragging it everywhere. What I love most is that it has the battery access cutout you want plus a built-in Arca-Swiss tripod plate on the bottom which is handy for quick shots. I didnt have to wait weeks for shipping either... just grabbed it from a shop in New York and had it in two days. The leather smells legit and it has started to age really nicely. Dont stress the Arte di Mano lead times for this trip. Save that extra cash for some good pasta and wine in Florence instead. The Lim's Design Leather Half Case for Leica M11 does everything you need for a fraction of the cost. I walked miles with it and it never felt bulky or annoying in the hand. Totally worth it for a practical setup.
Went through this exact panic when I first picked up my M. Spending hundreds on leather felt wrong after the body price. I ended up with the TP Original Genuine Leather Half Case for Leica M11 and it worked fine for a heavy shooting trip.
Late here but in my experience those custom shops are often backed up for months.
Honestly I'm in the exact same boat and it's driving me crazy. I've been obsessing over the technical specs of these cases for about two months now because I'm terrified of the fit not being 100% flush with the M11's specific dimensions. I leave for my own trip soon and I'm still stuck with a naked camera because the data on the tolerance levels of these handmade options is so all over the place... it's just exhausting trying to find something that's actually reliable. Quick question tho, are you planning on using a tripod at all while you're in Italy or are you strictly shooting handheld with a neck strap? I'm trying to figure out if the baseplate stability and the mounting screw tolerances are going to be a dealbreaker for the long-term reliability of the battery access. It's frustrating that there's no clear consensus on the build data yet.
