So I finally saved up for this old Leica M3 I found at a local shop here in Chicago but honestly I'm kind of freaking out. It didnt come with a strap and I have been holding it like a baby but I am so scared I am gonna drop it on the sidewalk or something. I tried using this cheap nylon one I had from my old digital camera but the metal rings look like they are gonna scratch the silver paint and I already see a tiny mark and I am literally about to cry lol. I have no idea what I am doing and all these websites talk about lugs and protectors and peak design and I dont know what any of that actually means or how it works.

I just want something that wont ruin the camera and feels safe. I have like 60 or 70 bucks left to spend on this but I need to get it by next Friday because I am going to a wedding and I really want to take photos there. Are there specific brands that everyone uses for these old ones? I saw some leather ones but they look really stiff and I dont want it rubbing against my neck all day and hurting. Is there a specific kind of ring I need so it doesnt scratch the sides or do they all do that? Sorry if this is a really basic thing to ask but I am totally lost and everything online looks so complicated for just a piece of string to hold my camera...

Quick question, are you set on a neck strap or would a wrist loop work? I've found these both include protective bumpers:

In my experience, COOPH Rope Camera Strap 100cm is a total steal tbh. Check B&H for fast shipping... it has leather protectors so it wont scratch your M3 at all.

Oh man, welcome to the Leica family! You are gonna have an absolute blast with that M3, it's seriously a masterpiece!! I totally get the panic tho... Whatever you do, please avoid those cheap nylon straps with the exposed metal rings! I made that mistake once with an old M2 and those rings chewed through the finish in like two days... it was heartbreaking to see those little crescent marks on the silver. You absolutely need something with leather ears or protectors that sit between the metal ring and the camera body. It's the only way to keep that finish looking pristine! Since youre heading to a wedding, definitely make sure the connection is solid. Those old lugs can be tricky if the rings are too thin or flimsy. It's all about that peace of mind so you can actually enjoy taking photos!

Man, I feel that panic in my soul. It is honestly ridiculous how much stress a tiny piece of metal can cause when you are holding a masterpiece like the M3.

  • The whole accessory market is such a scam nowadays, it drives me crazy. You see these basic straps for like a hundred bucks and they still use cheap rings that feel like they might bend or snap if you look at them wrong.
  • Its basically a Leica tax and its so frustrating because all you want is something reliable that wont fail you in the middle of a shoot.
  • I have been shooting M bodies for years and I am finally happy with my setup, but it took way too much trial and error to find stuff that actually lasts without being a total ripoff. Quick question though before I give you a solid recommendation... how tall are you exactly? And do you prefer the camera sitting high up on your chest or more down by your side? Wedding days are long and if the length is off, you are gonna be miserable by the reception regardless of the material...

To add to the point above about the Leica tax... unfortunately it is so true. I have had issues with almost every premium strap I have bought over the years. I once spent way too much on a bespoke leather one that actually had metal rivets on the inside that scratched my top plate anyway. It was such a letdown. These days I basically just go DIY because I do not trust the off-the-shelf stuff to actually protect the finish. I ended up just making my own out of some heavy duty paracord and industrial heat-shrink tubing to cover the rings. It cost me maybe five bucks and it is significantly more secure than those overpriced boutique ones. If you are handy, just making your own is the only way to ensure the rings are actually protected properly without paying a ridiculous markup for a name. It is not as pretty as the leather stuff but at least I know it wont fail.

@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly, a rope or cord style is probably your best bet for comfort. I have had issues with those really thick leather straps in the past... they look cool but they are honestly not as good as expected when you are actually out shooting all day. They stay stiff forever and just dig into your skin, which is the last thing you want at a wedding. Unfortunately, a lot of the leather stuff in your price range is gonna be that lower-quality hide that feels like cardboard. If you want something that wont kill your neck and actually protects the M3, just go with any of the Artisan and Artist Silk Cord Camera Straps. You really cant go wrong with their stuff. It is super soft right out of the box and they usually have those little leather flaps built-in so the rings dont touch the body. Its simple, looks classic on a vintage M, and wont leave you with a rash by the end of the night lol. Just make sure you get it from somewhere with fast shipping so it lands before Friday... basically anything else is just gonna frustrate you.
