What are the best high-quality half cases for the SL2 that actually offer decent protection? I've looked at the official Leica protector and those Luigi cases but I'm stuck. The Leica one looks kinda flimsy in photos and Luigi takes way too long to ship to Seattle for my trip next month... any other brands?

To add to the point above: honestly you dont have to drop a few hundred bucks for good protection. Quick question tho, what specifically are you hoping to protect... like just the base plate or are you looking for a bigger grip too? If you want to save some money for the trip, check out the TP Original Genuine Leather Half Case for Leica SL2. It is pretty solid for the price and usually ships way faster than those custom shops.

Wait, I just found this thread and wanted to jump in because I love my setup! Re: "To add to the point above: honestly you dont have to drop a few hundred bucks" - this is so true. Everyone has already covered the high-end boutique stuff and why the official gear is kinda flimsy, but for real-world protection on a budget, you really should look at Lim's. I am totally obsessed with the Lim's Design Italian Leather Half Case for Leica SL2 with Aluminum Base. Basically, it gives you that premium feel without the insane price tag. The best part is the integrated Arca-Swiss dovetail in the baseplate. It means you can just slide it onto a tripod without messing with extra plates. It is super sturdy and protects the bottom from scratches perfectly when you're out shooting. Since you need it for a trip next month, you can usually find these shipping way faster than the custom leather shops. It feels so professional and solid in the hand! Honestly, it changed how I handle my camera... you wont regret it.

Yo, I've been shooting with the SL2 for a couple years now and went through that exact same hunt when I first got it. You are spot on about the official protector... it looks okay but it is way too thin for actual protection imo. I have been super happy with the Arte di Mano Half Case for Leica SL2 Minerva Black for a while now. The craftsmanship is just next level and it actually adds a bit of bulk where you need it for a better grip. If you are worried about the shipping time for your trip next month, you should definitely look at the Oberwerth Half Case for Leica SL2 Classic Leather. I have used their stuff on several bodies and I am always satisfied with how rugged they feel. They usually have better availability at US dealers like Leica Store Miami or even B&H sometimes. It works well because the leather is thick enough to actually absorb a bump if you accidentally clank it against a railing or something. Another solid shout is the Angelo Pelle Half Case for Leica SL2 Nero. It has a really nice hand-stitched feel and the protection is legit. I have no complaints with mine after a year of heavy use. Since you are in Seattle, maybe check if any local shops can overnight one if they have stock. Good luck with the trip, honestly you are gonna love the SL2 for travel!

Like someone mentioned, those leather options are the standard go-to, but honestly, I had a pretty bad experience with that style during a shoot in high humidity last year. The tolerances on these boutique cases just arent as tight as the technical specs on the SL2 body itself, which really disappointed me. My old setup ended up trapping moisture between the material and the metal... didnt even notice until I saw some micro-pitting on the baseplate. It was a total nightmare. I have moved away from the fancy leather stuff because the fitment often feels like its more about aesthetics than actual mechanical protection. If youre looking for real reliability, look for something with a more rigid internal frame. I eventually switched to a different setup that uses a metal substructure because it actually maintains the air gap needed for the weather sealing to do its job. It isnt as pretty, but after seeing what moisture can do to that finish, I am never going back. Just look for something that prioritizes the cameras thermal and moisture needs rather than just the look.
