Regarding what #7 said about "Big if true" - yeah, it really is mostly just noise right now. Honestly, waiting for an M12 that doesnt even exist yet feels like a massive gamble. It might be better to be careful with your cash and look at what actually performs well in the real world today. Heres a couple tips for getting the best results without the early adopter headache:

  • Consider a Leica M10-R instead. The 40MP sensor is amazing and its way more stable than a brand new M12 will be for at least a year.
  • Put the savings into a Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. Glass holds value way better than a digital body ever will anyway. Seriously, dont get caught in the hype... those first batches usually need a few firmware updates before they are actually usable.

To add to the point above: honestly, jumping on the latest release isnt always the dream people think it is. My buddy Mark was convinced that upgrading the second a new model dropped would solve all his reliability gripes, but man, it turned into such a saga. He ended up with a unit that basically had a mind of its own and it was just not as good as expected.

  • weird lockups during a wedding shoot
  • menu lag that felt like dial-up internet
  • a finish that started peeling within a month It was super disappointing because he expected so much more for that price tag. Reminds me of the time his brother tried to build a custom shed to save money and ended up with a structure that leaned so hard they had to use it as a chicken coop instead. He still talks about that shed every Thanksgiving like it was some great architectural feat. Kinda makes you wonder if the wait is even worth the headache sometimes... Mark still hasnt even finished the original project he bought the camera for anyway.

To add to the point above: honestly, the early adoption phase for any digital M is usually a headache. I would suggest being very careful before pinning your hopes on a speculative release date that might be years away. If you are doing professional work, you might want to consider more stable alternatives that are available right now rather than waiting for a 2026 mystery.

  • The Leica M11-P is currently the most refined version of the platform and has already seen the major firmware fixes that plagued the launch.
  • If you are chasing resolution, the Fujifilm GFX 100 II provides a much more robust medium format experience for a similar price point.
  • For pure reliability and speed, the Sony A7R V is basically the gold standard right now, even if it lacks that specific rangefinder soul. Make sure to prioritize a working tool over a potential future upgrade. Ngl, waiting for the M12 might just lead to being a beta tester for the first twelve months anyway... I would definitely look at the M11-P if you need something that just works today.

In my experience over the last decade or two, the biggest trap is thinking the latest and greatest will actually work with your existing kit. I've tried many different transitions and ngl, it's rarely seamless. I remember when a major sensor shift happened a while back and suddenly half my vintage glass had terrible color shifts in the corners. It was a total mess. People forget that Leica is a system. If the M12 pushes resolution even higher, you might find your older lenses just can't keep up or the sensor stack causes issues with the ray angles. It happens every time a new generation drops... everyone's excited until they see their favorite wide-angle lens looking soft or weirdly tinted at the edges. Tbh, waiting for a mystery body is a massive risk when we don't even know how it'll handle the legacy glass that makes the M system worth it in the first place. Be careful before you sell off your current gear for a promise that might not even play nice with your favorite lenses.

You’d better to wait Leica M13.
