Does anyone have a specific thumb grip they swear by for the Leica M11 because the ergonomics on this thing are honestly driving me crazy? I finally saved up for almost a year to get my silver M11 here in London, and while the images are incredible, the actual handling is just... it feels like I'm holding a slippery bar of soap half the time. I’ve almost dropped it twice while shooting street photography near Waterloo station and my hand starts cramping after only 30 minutes of walking around. I dont get why a camera this expensive feels so insecure in the hand.
I spent nearly seven grand on the body so I really dont want to drop it, obviously. I thought the new finish would be grippier than the M10 but it's just not working for me and it makes me nervous every time I pull it out of my bag. I've been looking at the official Leica one but it's like 250 bucks which feels like a total rip off after already spending so much on the kit. Then there is the Match Technical Thumbs Up but I've heard mixed things about whether it blocks the dials or if it feels too bulky in a small bag.
I'm looking for something that wont scratch the hot shoe or the finish of the camera because I might want to trade it in later if I cant get used to the weight balance. I also use a Peak Design strap but it doesnt help with the one-handed grip when im trying to change settings on the fly or adjust my focus. Budget-wise I'd like to stay under 150 if possible but if the 250 one is honestly the only thing that actually works then fine, I'll bite the bullet and pay the Leica tax. Is the official one actually worth the premium or should I just go with a cheaper Haoge or something else off Amazon? I really need to figure this out before my trip to Italy next month because I'm gonna be shooting all day and I dont want to be miserable or worried about my camera hitting the pavement...
Congrats on the silver M11, though I totally feel your pain on the handling. That finish is basically a slip-and-slide when your hands get even slightly sweaty. Ngl I had the exact same hand cramping issue during a long weekend in Paris last year. The official Leica Thumb Support M11 Silver 24016 is technically the best choice for preserving the camera because it’s made of brass and the tolerances are spot on. It wont scratch your hot shoe like some of the cheaper aluminum ones might if they're forced in. While it is pricey, it feels like part of the body and doesnt move a millimeter. If the Leica tax feels too high, the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-MX for Leica M11 is the legendary alternative. This one is very comfortable because of the rubber pad where your thumb rests, which helps with the grip pressure. Some people think it’s a bit bulky, but for street photography, that extra leverage is a lifesaver when you're shooting one-handed. Another solid budget pick is the Haoge THB-M11S Thumb Grip for Leica M11. Its way cheaper and works fine, though the silver paint might not be a perfect match for the Leica finish. Since youre headed to Italy, you really want that security so you can focus on the light and not on whether the camera is gonna hit the cobblestones. You got this, just pick one and youll feel way more confident.
To add to the point above: I had a similar scare with my M11 while shooting near the Thames last winter. Total heart-in-mouth moment when it almost slipped. Honestly, if you want reliability without the crazy price tag, check out the TTArtisan Thumb Grip for Leica M11. I picked one up on a whim before a trip to Greece because I couldnt justify the 250 for the official one at the time. Its surprisingly solid for the price and the color match is decent enough for the silver. The fit is tight so it doesnt wiggle, which is the main thing you want for that one-handed security when you're weaving through crowds in Italy. Quick tip: just check the little rubber padding on the underside before you slide it in. I usually add a tiny sliver of gaffers tape to the contact points just to be 100% sure it wont rub the finish over time. It makes the camera feel way more locked in and basically cured my hand cramps. Tbh I dont even think about the soap bar feeling anymore.
> Regarding what #1 said about "Congrats on the silver M11, though I totally feel your pain on the handling." Ngl that silver finish is basically a bar of soap. I would suggest looking at the Haoge THB-M11S Thumb Grip for Leica M11 if you want to save some cash. Be careful with those cheap generic ones tho, they can sometimes scratch the hot shoe. This one is solid and way cheaper than the official version... helps a ton with the hand cramps.
I was just reading this and had to jump in!! I went through three different setups before my Italy trip last year because that silver finish is seriously like ice. I am a bit of a spec nerd and I actually measured the tolerances on a few of these because I was terrified of scratching the hot shoe too. Hand cramps are the absolute worst when you are trying to enjoy a vacation!!
Yep, this is the way
Honestly, its a bit of a letdown that a camera this expensive feels so insecure in the hand... unfortunately the silver M11 is notoriously slippery compared to the black version. I have had issues with the handling on mine since day one and it really kills the vibe when you are constantly worried about dropping it. A few things you might want to look at:
