What are you guys using for external viewfinders on older Leica M bodies when you want to shoot wider than 35mm?

I just picked up a beautiful M2 from an estate sale here in Chicago for a total steal and I'm honestly so excited to start shooting with it but the framing is driving me a bit crazy already. I really want to get a 21mm lens for some wide street shots but since the M2 built-in lines only go to 35mm I'm stuck needing an external finder for the cold shoe. I did some digging online and saw a lot of people swearing by the Voigtländer metal finders because they are apparently super bright and easy to see through but then I also saw some collectors on a different forum saying the vintage Leica SBLOO or the SLOOZ are the only way to go if you want the real experience.

The problem is those vintage ones are getting so expensive and I'm not sure if the optics actually hold up compared to modern stuff or if it's just for the look. I am heading to Japan in three weeks for a vacation and really want to have this sorted before I go. My budget is around $250 to $300 so I cant go totally overboard on some rare piece of glass. Is the distortion on the Voigtländer stuff really as bad as some people say or should I just hunt for a used Leica one... I just want something that wont fall off or feel like cheap plastic on my chrome body.

If you're worried about distortion and want something that feels premium on that M2, I'd suggest hunting for a used Carl Zeiss 21mm ZM Bright Line Finder. I have been using one for a few years now and honestly haven't looked back at the Leica or Voigtlander ones. It just works well and stays put.

  • The glass is huge. It gives you a much better view compared to the cramped feel of those tiny vintage finders.
  • No distortion. Straight lines actually stay straight, which is a big deal if you're doing street stuff with architecture in the background.
  • Secure fit. The metal mount is super precise. I never worry about it snagging on my bag and popping off like the plastic ones. Its usually right around $300 used, so it fits your budget perfectly if you find a decent deal. No plastic feel at all. The eye relief is great too if you wear glasses.

I had issues with the vintage Leica finders being way too hazy for the price. Honestly, they are a bit of a letdown if you actually want to see your frame. Unfortunately, the old glass just doesnt hold up well. I recommend the Voigtlander 21mm Metal Brightline Finder instead. Its way more practical, fits your budget, and looks great on a chrome M2 without feeling like cheap plastic.

Late to the party but this whole thread is 💯. Glad I found it.
