So I finally bit the bullet and grabbed an M11 for a street project I'm shooting in Chicago next month and honestly the handling is kind of tripping me up. Ive been shooting film Ms for like fifteen years so I thought it would be a seamless transition but the digital body feels way more slippery or just denser? I dont know. I keep feeling like I'm gonna drop it when I'm doing one-handed shots.
So I was thinking about getting one of those thumb grips that slides into the hot shoe. My logic was it would give me that extra leverage but man they are pricey for what they are. Like 250 bucks for a piece of metal? Im looking at the Match Technical ones versus the OEM Leica one. I'm worried though that it might get in the way of the rear dial or make the camera feel too bulky in my bag since I use a pretty tight leather slip case.
Has anyone actually found these essential or is it just a gimmick for people with big hands? I really want to love the ergonomics but right now it just doesnt feel as "locked in" as my old M6 did without any accessories. I wonder if I should just get a half case with a built-in grip instead but that adds even more weight... what are you guys using for daily carry?
> I keep feeling like I'm gonna drop it To add to the point above: prioritize a secure fit to avoid hot shoe stress. The Haoge THB-M11B Thumb Grip is a decent, lower-cost option to see if the handling actually feels safer.
Honestly, I've gone through this exact cycle with every digital M since the M9. That M11 is definitely denser and the finish is kinda slippery if your hands are dry. In my experience, a thumb grip isnt a gimmick at all... it's basically the only way I feel safe shooting one-handed while moving through a crowd. I've tried many over the years, and the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-MX is my favorite because the brass weight balances the camera well, even if the price is basically highway robbery for a tiny bit of metal. If you're worried about it snagging in your leather case tho, you might actually prefer a baseplate grip instead. Something like the IDS Works Modular Grip for Leica M11 gives you that solid M6 feeling without adding the bulk of a full leather half-case. It's a bit of an investment, but way cheaper than a repair bill if the camera ever slips out of your palm.
Totally agree about them feeling slippery compared to film. You might want to consider one, but be careful because they can definitely snag when you're sliding the camera into a tight case.
I'd be careful with the hot shoe approach though. If you're really relying on that thumb grip for leverage during one-handed street shots in Chicago, you're putting a ton of torque on those tiny screws holding the hot shoe plate in place. I've seen them wiggle loose over time on older digital bodies and it's a pricey fix. Since you mentioned being worried about the camera being slippery, you might want to look at the Leica M11 Handgrip instead. It feels way more solid because it bolts directly into the base of the camera. If you really want that locked-in feeling, pair it with the Leica Finger Loop Size M. It basically tethers the camera to your hand. It's a way more reliable setup than a thumb rest if you're actually worried about security while moving through crowds. Just make sure to test the loop size before you commit because if it's too tight, it gets annoying fast. It definitely adds some bulk, but honestly, it is worth it to not have that heart in your throat feeling every time you pull the camera out of your bag. Plus, it won't mess with your rear dial access or snag on your leather slip case like those thumb rests tend to do.
