Which ND filters work best for DJI Air series drones?

Finally got my hands on the Air 3 and I am so stoked to take it to Moab next Friday for some desert shots! But man the filter situation is a rabbit hole. I have been looking at the Freewell packs because they seem like a better value but then I see everyone on YouTube swearing by the PolarPro Vivid collection. My logic was that I just need a basic ND16 or 32 to keep my shutter speed right for that cinematic motion blur but then I started reading about how the CPL versions can actually ruin the sky if you turn the drone too fast and the light angle changes... that sounds like a nightmare to fix in post.

I found these:

  • Freewell Bright Day 6-pack
  • PolarPro Shutter Collection
  • DJI official ones but they seem kinda basic?

I have got about $130 left in my gear budget for this month and I dont want to waste it on glass that is gonna give me a weird color cast. Also some people say you need the ND64 for really bright sand but is that overkill for most situations? I am just trying to get those smooth 4k 60fps shots without it looking like a shaky cell phone video. Do I really need the whole 6-pack or can I get away with just two specific ones? Its all pretty confusing once you start looking at the glass quality vs the weight of the filters for the gimbal motors...

I have been very satisfied with the Freewell DJI Air 3 Bright Day 6-Pack for a while now. It works well and I have zero complaints about color shifts or gimbal weight. Tbh the PolarPro DJI Air 3 Shutter Collection is nice glass but way more expensive for basically the same results. You will definitely need that ND64 for Moab sun. TL;DR: Freewell is the safe, reliable choice that fits your budget.

^ This. Also, in my experience, skipping CPLs for Moab is the right move. Over the years, Ive seen light shifts kill footage when panning.

I used the PGYTECH DJI Air 3 ND Filter Set Professional in Moab. Decent for my trip tho...

  • ND64 is key for sand
  • no gimbal stress
  • colors stayed neutral
