So I finally treated myself to the Mavic 3 Pro after saving up for like a year and now I'm terrified of breaking it before I even get any good shots. I have this big photography trip out to the Oregon coast coming up in about three weeks and I'm gonna be doing some pretty heavy hiking through some rough terrain and honestly the weather out there is probably gonna be a mess. I need a hard case that is actually waterproof and can take a beating in the back of my truck with all my other camping stuff. Right now I am looking at the GPC (GoProfessional) one because everyone says the foam is super high quality and fits everything perfectly but then I saw the Nanuk 915 which looks really solid and has those nice powerclaw latches. The GPC is like $130 which is fine since my budget is around $150 but the Nanuk is a bit cheaper and comes in cool colors like orange so I dont lose it in the woods. Is the extra money for the GPC custom foam worth it or should I just get the Nanuk and maybe pluck the foam myself or find an insert? I also looked at the HPRC but that might be overkill... what do you guys think would be the best move for someone who is clumsy and hiking in the rain?
Honestly, skip the pluck foam for heavy hiking. I would suggest the GPC DJI Mavic 3 Pro Hard Case Water-Jet Cut Foam over the Nanuk 915 Case with Foam if youre worried about the drone shifting. Be careful with DIY plucking, it usually falls apart. Make sure the pressure valve is functioning properly for those elevation changes. That GPC foam is definitely worth the extra cash imo.
Jumping in because I was honestly disappointed with how fast my generic case fell apart. Pluck foam is kinda trash for hiking... it just shreds. If you want protection:
I was reading this earlier and just had to chime in because I am a total gear nerd when it comes to crush-ratings and waterproofing! Honestly, if you are hitting the Oregon coast, you are gonna deal with serious humidity and salt spray. I once wiped out while crossing a creek during a nasty storm with my Pelican 1450 Case strapped to my pack. It took a full dunk and my Mavic was bone dry when I opened it up later. Pelican uses a specialized neoprene o-ring seal and an automatic pressure equalization valve that is basically the gold standard for reliability. Since you are worried about being clumsy, look into the Pelican TrekPak Divider System. It is amazing because it uses high-density closed-cell foam that doesnt hold moisture or shed tiny foam bits into your drone motors like the cheap pluck stuff does. You can customize the layout exactly how you want it using these little steel U-pins. It is way more technical and durable than standard foam, plus it handles the vibration of a truck bed way better. That combo might be slightly over 150 but it is literally bulletproof for heavy hiking!
