Which external flash is actually going to work best with the Canon 90D without making me want to pull my hair out? I am so frustrated right now because I spent all this money on a nice camera but every photo I take inside looks like it was taken with a potato from 2005. I've got my sisters wedding coming up in two weeks here in Chicago and I am supposed to be the one taking the nice candid photos during the reception but everything is just dark and blurry and gross. I tried using that little flash that pops out of the top of the camera but it just makes everyone look like a deer in headlights and the background is still pitch black. I'm a complete newbie at this and I honestly have no idea what I am doing so sorry if this is a really stupid question but I'm totally lost.

I went on Amazon and searched for flashes and there are so many brands like Godox and Neewer and then the Canon ones that cost like five hundred dollars which I definitely cannot afford right now. My budget is like $150 tops because the 90D already totally broke the bank. People keep talking about things like TTL and high speed sync and manual zoom and honestly it sounds like a different language to me. Do I need a specific brand to talk to the Canon system or can I just buy any random one? Are the cheap ones gonna break my camera or just not work right? I just want something that I can slide onto the top and it just works. Like it knows how much light to give without me having to do math in my head while people are dancing and moving around. Is that even a thing? Please tell me there is something simple out there because I'm about to just give up and use my iPhone for the whole wedding...

Look, I've tried many setups over the years and you definitely want TTL so the camera handles the light math.

I've been shooting for years and honestly the Yongnuo YN685 II Speedlite for Canon has never let me down. It works perfectly with the 90D and is super reliable for the price. I used to struggle with lighting until I learned to bounce the flash off the ceiling. It’s my favorite trick... just aim the flash head up and let the light wrap around the room. Itll stop those harsh shadows immediately and save your photos.

@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, TTL is the only way to go if you dont want to lose your mind during a wedding. I tried to save money once with a random generic flash and it was a total disaster. Here is what I learned the hard way:

  • The super cheap stuff usually lacks that handshake with the camera. Mine would just fire at full power regardless of my settings, which basically blinded everyone.
  • Battery life on the knock-offs can be terrible. Mine died halfway through the event and I missed the best shots because I was fumbling with AA batteries in the dark.
  • Build quality is usually pretty bad too. My first budget flash actually got stuck on the hot shoe because the locking pin was made of cheap plastic. Maybe look into older used professional gear or units with lithium packs instead. They are way more reliable than the bottom-barrel stuff I wasted money on. I am still disappointed by that whole experience tbh.
