so i just got this canon eos rebel t7 for my sisters wedding coming up in like three weeks and im honestly panicking because the indoor lighting at the church is terrible. i tried taking some test shots and they all look grainy or just pitch black so i figured i need one of those big flash things that sit on top of the camera. sorry if this is a super basic question but i have no idea where to start looking. my logic was just to buy the canon brand one because it probably fits best but they are like 400 dollars which is way over my $150 budget. i saw some other brands online like godox or yongnuo and they are way cheaper but i dont know if they will actually work with my camera or if i need to do something special to make them talk to each other. like do they just click in? im really scared of buying something that doesnt fit or worse ruins the camera electronics somehow because im totally new to this. i just want something that makes the people look good without that harsh white light look. is there a specific model that is foolproof for a beginner? i really dont want to mess up her big day...
Building on the earlier suggestion, i honestly found the older yongnuo stuff like the Yongnuo YN560 IV Wireless Flash pretty disappointing because its fully manual... way too much work for a wedding beginner. you definitely want TTL (automatic) so the camera does the math for you. honestly canon stripping the center pin off the t7 hot shoe was a total disaster for budget users, it makes finding cheap flashes a nightmare. unfortunately most universal flashes just wont fire on your camera at all. i had issues with the cheaper AA battery models dying during the ceremony too, which was a total mess. i switched to the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-ion Flash and never looked back because the lithium battery lasts forever and it actually works with the t7s weird hot shoe. just point the flash head at the ceiling to bounce the light, dont point it straight at people or theyll look like ghosts.
@Reply #1 - good point! T7 hot shoes don't have the center pin.
> my logic was just to buy the canon brand one because it probably fits best but they are like 400 dollars Unfortunately, official Canon gear is often way overpriced. My experience with the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT was poor due to slow recycle times. The Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon is far superior for your budget tho. Honestly, the Yongnuo YN568EX II Speedlite wasnt as good as expected because the build felt flimsy. Godox is basically the reliable choice for TTL automation.
My buddy told me the exact same thing last week. Guess he was right lol.
