Which external flash works best for Canon EOS R series?

Is the Canon EL-5 actually better for the R series than something like the Godox V1Pro or should I just stick with the native glass? I've been doing a ton of research for a wedding I'm shooting for a friend in late November in Portland and the venue is basically a cave so I need something that won't fail me mid-reception. I'm rocking an R6 Mark II right now and the whole multi-function shoe thing has me a bit paranoid about compatibility with third party brands.

I'm stuck between the EL-5 which is about $380 and the Godox V1 or maybe the newer V1Pro. The Canon one seems like the safe bet because it's native and the weather sealing is probably better for the PNW drizzle but the Godox round head looks so much smoother for portraits and the battery life is supposedly insane. Plus I can get the Godox for like $200ish which leaves money for a trigger. My budget is pretty tight at $400 total.

Does the EL-5 really offer that much better communication with the R series autofocus or is the Godox basically the same thing for half the price? I've heard some people say the newer Canon shoes are fragile with older style flashes and I dont want to break my camera's hotshoe just to save a few bucks...

Found this thread while looking for shoe adapters and yeah, I totally agree about the fragility. Unfortunately, I had issues with the Canon Speedlite EL-5 overheating faster than I expected during a burst session, which was a huge letdown for the price. Honestly, it's not as good as expected for such a pro native unit. Since you're on a budget, maybe look at the Godox V1Pro C for Canon instead. I know it's not native glass, but the build quality on the Pro version is way better than the original V1 and it handles the heat much better. You could even pick up a Godox XProII-C TTL Wireless Flash Trigger with the leftover money. It's a shame Canon makes the native stuff so pricey, but youll definitely pull off that wedding in Portland. Just keep an eye on that shoe mount and you'll be fine!
